Description: Antique map titled 'Mappe-Monde dresse sur les Observations de mrs. de l'Academie Royale des Sciences. Nova Orbis Tabula ad Usum Serenissimi Burgundiae Ducis.' Double hemisphere world map. Decorative map of the world, later ed. being the first edition to illustrate the routes of the most famous naval explorers from 1542 to ca. 1740, ending with the Russian voyages of Tchirikow and Bering. Four polar views showing the world from various angles in the corners. A decorative cartouche in the top edge, and another in the lower edge. Updated version of the 1696 Sanson / Mortier map. With additions based on M. de l'Isle. First published in Amsterdam by Jean Covens & Corneille Mortier, ca. 1730. This ed. c.1740 with additions based on the observations of the Academy of Petersbourgh. On an even later ed. even more information was added particularly west of North America. Ref: Shirley #581.
