Description: Antique print, titled: 'Franciscus Valdesius, Hispani Dux exercitus' - Very rare half length portrait of Franciscus Valdesius ( Francis Valdez, Valdes or Baldes), printed in 1649. Franciscus Valdesius ( Valdez) is known is known as the Commander of the Spanish troops during the surrounding in 1574 of Leiden (seen over his shoulder in the background), engraved by Cornelis Visscher (1628 - 1658), who collaborated with the publisher Pieter Soutman in a series of four numbered portraits commemorating key figures in the siege story. This offered portrait is number I of the series of 4.
