Description: Antique print, titled: 'Vue d'Optique nouvelle representant une des portes de Harlem en Hollande, prise de l'interieur de la Ville avec la maison du professeur.' - View of the Castle and Gate of Heemstede (near Haarlem) instead of (as in the caption) Haarlem Gate. This is an optical print, also called 'vue optique' or 'vue d'optique', which were made to be viewed through a Zograscope, or other devices of convex lens and mirrors, all of which produced an optical illusion of depth.

Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Jacques Chereau' after an anonymous artist. Jacques (le jeune) Chereau (1688-1776) was an engraver and publisher and worked for one year in England. He was well known as engraver of portraits. His brother Francois Chereau was born in 1680 in Blois, it is unknown when he settled in Paris. He was student of Gerard Audran and Pierre Drevet. In 1718 he acquired the stock of copperplates and prints of his tutor Gerard Audran. He was a very talented engraver. After his death in 1729 the copperplates were sold by his widow.
