.. Antique Print of the Palestrina Mosaic by Fokke (c.1760)

Description: Antique print titled 'Ingelegde Grond welke nog te zien is in den Tempel der Fortuna Primigenia te Palestrina in Italië (..)'. Impressive print of the Palestrina Mosaic or Nile mosaic of Palestrina, a late Hellenistic floor mosaic depicting the Nile in its passage from the Blue Nile to the Mediterranean. The mosaic was part of a Classical sanctuary-grotto in Palestrina, a town east of Ancient Rome, in central Italy. Source unknown, to be determined.

Artists and Engravers: Simon Fokke (Amsterdam, 1712 - 1784) was a Dutch engraver, etcher and designer. He was a student of Jan Caspar Philips, and worked mainly in book illustration.
