North America in the early years after the Louisiana Purchase, titled "Carte de l'Amérique Septentrionale, dressée pour l'intelligence de l'Histoire générale des Voyages de Laharpe, par Ambroise Tardieu, 1821", an original copper engraving with hand outline color. The map is plate 14 from Tardieu's Atlas pour servir à l'intelligence de l'Histoire générale des Voyages, de Laharpe.
The map covers the continent on a curved projection, from Siberia and Russian America at the upper left, past Greenland, to Central America and the northern edge of South America at the lower right. The boundaries are picked out in outline color: the United States, the British possessions, New Spain and the Russian northwest each have their own tint. The western interior is only lightly filled in, with rivers and mountain ranges sketched across the plains, and the title is set in a plain lettered panel at the lower left. The oceans are lettered in French, including "Océan Glacial Arctique" and "Grand Océan Boréal".
Ambroise Tardieu was a Paris engraver and geographer who made many atlas maps for French travel collections. A date of 1821 places this sheet after the publication of the Lewis and Clark report.
