About this sheet
Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama, shown on a German steel-engraved map titled "Die Staaten von Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana & Alabama" and dated 1846 on the sheet, published by Joseph Meyer's Bibliographisches Institut at Hildburghausen. The imprint also names Amsterdam, Paris and Philadelphia, and the states are outlined in pink, blue, yellow and green.
The map is a detailed record of the Lower Mississippi region and includes the Florida Panhandle, with the Gulf of Mexico along the foot of the sheet. Many roads, rivers, forts and towns are lettered, including Little Rock, Memphis, Jackson, Mobile and New Orleans, and the neighboring states of Tennessee and Georgia and the Mexican province named at the left appear at the margins. An inset at the lower left shows the vicinity of New Orleans, with Lake Pontchartrain and the winding river below the city. A scale of miles in German and English is printed across the top.
Joseph Meyer (1796 to 1856) was a German publisher who founded the Bibliographisches Institut in 1826. He was best known for his atlases and for Meyers Universum, which featured steel engravings of the world and found subscribers across Europe.
