About this sheet
This is an original antique map of Scandinavia, a steel engraving colored by hand, titled "SWEDEN, NORWAY AND DENMARK INCLUDING THE BALTIC SEA & RUSSIAN PROVINCES ADJACENT". It covers Norway, Sweden and Denmark from the North Cape to Schleswig and Holstein, with Finland, Estonia, Livonia and Courland across the Baltic as far as St. Petersburg. Norway is outlined in yellow, Denmark in blue and Sweden in red, and the coasts have a pale blue wash. The Arctic Circle is marked.
Below the title the plate reads "Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge." and explains the abbreviations, giving the Scandinavian terms in brackets: "I. (Öe) Island", "L. (Vang) Lake" and "R. (Elv) River". A small table headed "Population" gives "Sweden 2,800,000", "Norway 1,050,000" and "Denmark 1,950,000". Scales of "Swedish Miles 10,42 = 1 Degree", "Danish Miles 10,41 = 1 Degree" and "English Miles 69.17 = 1 Degree" run up the right margin, and the upper border is lettered "Meridian of Greenwich". Below the border is the imprint "London, Edward Stanford. 6, Charing Cross.", with the plate number "14." outside the lower right corner.
The plate comes from The Harrow Atlas of Modern Geography, published in London in 1858 by Edward Stanford of 6 Charing Cross and sold at Harrow by Crossley and Clarke, booksellers to Harrow School. Its maps were selected from those of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, founded in London in 1826, which issued its series of maps in parts from 1829 until the Society was wound up in 1848. Edward Stanford later issued the maps under his own imprint, as this sheet shows. Off the Lofoden Isles the map letters the "Malström" between Moskenæsöe and Væröe, and Finland is shown on the Russian side of the border with Sweden.
The tall format suits the long Norwegian coast, and the map hangs well in a narrow space.
