What the condition grades mean

Excellent: Bright and clean, with no faults worth mentioning.
Very good: Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.
Good: Normal signs of age for a sheet of this period: toning, some foxing, small marks or neat old repairs.
Fair: Clear faults such as staining, tears or repairs, priced to match.

Condition

Very good condition with light toning and faint darkening along the original center fold. Plate mark visible. Clean margins with only minor handling wear. Strong impression with crisp engraved detail.

About this sheet

Quebec in c.1888, an original map by Rand, McNally & Co. printed in black on toned paper with railroad lines overprinted in red and blue. The running head "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Quebec" appears across the top between atlas page numbers 68 and 69.

The sheet shows the settled southern part of the province along the St. Lawrence River, which runs diagonally from the lower left to the upper right. Montreal lies at the lower center, with a dense network of railroad lines running out to the south toward the United States border, and Quebec City stands on the river toward the right. A large inset at the upper left, lettered "Gulf of St. Lawrence," shows Anticosti Island and the Gaspé shore at a larger scale. Ontario lies at the left edge and New Brunswick and the American border towns at the bottom.

The sheet shows the province when its railroads were joining Montreal and Quebec to Ontario, the Maritimes and New England.
