About this sheet
Northwest Texas and the Panhandle on a page of Rand, McNally and Co.'s atlas, lettered "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Northwest Texas" and numbered 459, with the inset title "N.W. Corner & Pan-Handle." The map is printed in black with railroads picked out in color, c.1888.
The sheet is divided into a grid of large rectangular counties, most of them lettered across their full width: Dallam, Hartley, Oldham, Deaf Smith, Hansford, Ochiltree, Lipscomb, Potter, Randall, Armstrong, Donley, Gray, Wheeler, Childress, and others below. "Indian Territory" runs down the east edge. Two railroad lines cross the sheet diagonally, one in red and one in blue-green, laid out through the northern counties toward the northeast corner. Rivers and creeks are drawn in fine line, and lakes and watering places in the southern counties are named in small type.
The map shows the Panhandle in the years when its counties were being organized and the first railroads were reaching the high plains.
