About this sheet
Kansas City at the meeting of Missouri and Kansas, a city plan on a page of Rand, McNally and Co.'s atlas, lettered "Rand, McNally & Co.'s Missouri" and numbered 381, c.1888. The sheet is printed in black on atlas paper.
The Missouri River sweeps in a wide curve down the right side of the page, with "Harlem" across the river at the right edge. The Kansas River enters from the top and meets it, and the state line runs across the upper left. A dense grid of city blocks fills the center and left, with street names engraved along the avenues, and heavy railroad lines cut diagonally through it. Rail yards, the Union station area and stock yards are marked at the junction of the two rivers, and "Old Town" and "Kansas" are lettered along the bluff at the right.
The plan shows Kansas City in the years of its growth as a rail and livestock center, when the stock yards and the rail connections at the river junction fed its trade in cattle and grain.
