About this sheet
California in 1888, an original atlas map from Rand, McNally & Co.'s Improved Indexed Business Atlas and Shippers Guide, titled "Rand, McNally & Co.'s California" in the right margin, with page numbers 586 and 587 in the upper corners.
The state is drawn on a tall, narrow sheet, with the Pacific Ocean at the left and Mexico at the foot, and a large inset at the upper right gives more detail of the San Francisco Bay region. Railroads are traced in red and blue, with the Southern Pacific lines running down the Central Valley and linking Sacramento, Fresno and Los Angeles, and the transcontinental line crossing the Sierra Nevada toward Nevada. San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento and Oakland are lettered, along with smaller towns such as Riverside, Pasadena and Santa Barbara, and mining towns of the Sierra foothills. County boundaries are drawn throughout, and the Sierra Nevada, Lake Tahoe and the Channel Islands are shown.
By 1888 California was moving from its mining past to agriculture and city growth, and Southern California was in the midst of a railroad-driven land boom.
