A finely engraved and richly decorated 17th-century map of the historic Archbishopric of Cambrai, titled Archiepiscopatus Cameracensis, published by Willem and Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1642. This elegant composition originates from Blaeu’s celebrated Toonneel des Aerdrycx, produced at the height of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography.
The map depicts the region of Cambrésis and surrounding territories, including parts of Artois, Hainaut, and Picardy, with the city of Cambrai at its center. This area held significant political and ecclesiastical importance in early modern Europe, serving as a strategic crossroads between the French Kingdom and the Spanish Netherlands. The Archbishopric of Cambrai was one of the most influential ecclesiastical territories in the region, adding both religious and administrative weight to its geographic prominence.
Blaeu’s engraving is exceptionally detailed, showing a dense network of towns, villages, rivers, and roads across the landscape. Condition:
Very good condition for its age. Original hand coloring. Central fold as issued. Light age toning and minor handling wear to the margins. Paper remains strong and stable.
Framing tips:
This map pairs beautifully with a dark walnut or ebonized frame and a wide ivory or cream mat, enhancing the warmth of the paper and the richness of the heraldic elements. For a more contemporary presentation, a thin black or bronze frame with a crisp off-white mat creates a refined museum-style display.
