A finely engraved and beautifully hand-colored antique map depicting the historic French provinces of Gâtinois and Sénonois, engraved and published by Willem and Joan Blaeu during the height of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography. Rich in decorative detail and densely filled with towns, forests, rivers, and regional boundaries, this map exemplifies the precision and elegance that made the Blaeu family among the most celebrated mapmakers of the 17th century.
The map centers on the historic regions south of Paris, encompassing territories around Sens, Montargis, Nemours, and parts of the Loire valley. The composition is framed by an elaborate decorative title cartouche and royal coat of arms, while the lower left corner contains a finely engraved distance scale accompanied by a costumed figure. The intricate network of villages and roads offers a fascinating insight into early modern France before the standardization of modern administrative divisions.
Produced by Willem and Joan Blaeu for the celebrated atlas Toonneel des Aerdrycx, one of the most luxurious and influential atlases of the 17th century, this map reflects the extraordinary craftsmanship and geographic ambition of the Blaeu publishing house in Amsterdam. Blaeu atlases were prized by wealthy merchants, scholars, diplomats, and noble families throughout Europe, combining scientific cartography with artistic refinement.
