About this sheet

North America in 1884, an original engraved map titled "North America", prepared by the Scottish cartographer John Bartholomew and published in Edinburgh by A. & C. Black, as part of the new and revised edition of Black's General Atlas of the World. The countries are colored by hand in soft pink, yellow, green and orange.

The map shows the whole continent from Alaska and the Arctic archipelago to the Isthmus of Central America. The "Dominion of Canada" fills the north in pink, with Hudson Bay at its center and Newfoundland and Labrador to the east, and Greenland is shown in green at the upper right. The United States is lettered in yellow, with its state and territorial boundaries drawn across the West, and Mexico lies below in green, with the Central American republics at the southeast. Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola and the other West Indies are drawn in the Caribbean Sea, and a corner of South America appears at the lower right.

The title "Dominion of Canada" dates the sheet to the years after Confederation in 1867, and the western United States appears divided into the states and territories of the early 1880s.
