About this sheet

Peru and Bolivia in the 1830s, titled "Pérou et Bolivia, 1836", an original engraving by Thierry from the Atlas Complet du Précis de la Géographie Universelle of Conrad Malte-Brun. The map is colored in outline.

The title is set in an ornamental lettered flourish at the lower left, with the engraving credit "Gravé par Thierry" beneath the border. The map covers the Pacific coast of Peru, from the Gulf of Guayaquil at the north, with the Andes drawn in fine hachures, inland to the new state of Bolivia. Peru is bordered in pink and Bolivia in yellow, with Colombia to the north, Brazil to the east and "La Plata" to the south, and the Amazon headwaters and Lake Titicaca are drawn in. Scales of French and Spanish leagues are given in the upper right corner.

The date of 1836 falls in the brief Peru-Bolivian Confederation, but the map shows the two republics as separate states.
