Blaeu Map of Portugal – Portugallia et Algarbia, Antique Iberia Map, 1642
A highly decorative and historically important map of Portugal, titled Portugallia et Algarbia quae olim Lusitania, published by Willem and Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1642. This finely engraved map originates from Blaeu’s celebrated atlas Toonneel des Aerdrycx, produced during the golden age of Dutch cartography, when the Blaeu firm became synonymous with precision, elegance, and artistic refinement.
The map depicts the entire kingdom of Portugal in exceptional detail, extending from the Algarve in the south to the northern border regions near Galicia. Rivers, towns, mountain ranges, and regional divisions are carefully engraved, offering a rich and highly readable portrait of 17th-century Portugal. The Atlantic coastline is animated with sailing vessels and compass roses, reinforcing the maritime identity of the nation during its age of overseas exploration and trade.
A standout feature is the elaborate Baroque cartouche in the lower left, framed by elegantly dressed figures and rich ornamentation. Heraldic shields appear in the upper corners, while a beautifully engraved distance scale balances the lower portion of the composition. The original hand-coloring remains fresh and vibrant, delicately emphasizing provinces, borders, and decorative elements without overwhelming the engraving itself.

Condition: Good condition for its age. Original central fold as issued. Light overall toning consistent with age. Minor wear and some faint staining, mainly in the margins. Edges slightly irregular. Colors remain strong and attractive. Please study image carefully.
Framing: This piece presents beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized wood frame with a wide warm ivory mat. A museum-style presentation enhances the decorative cartouche and coastal detail. Particularly effective in a darker study or classic interior setting.
