A richly engraved and highly decorative map of Andalusia in southern Spain, centered on Seville, Cordoba, and Granada, published by Willem and Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1642. This exceptional map originates from Blaeu’s renowned atlas Toonneel des Aerdrycx, one of the most celebrated achievements of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography.
This map captures the historic heart of southern Spain with remarkable clarity and density. The Guadalquivir River winds prominently through the composition, linking key cities such as Seville and Cordoba, while Granada and the mountainous terrain of the Sierra Nevada are rendered with fine engraved detail. The coastline along the Mediterranean and Atlantic is beautifully articulated, with shipping routes, compass roses, and sailing vessels emphasizing the maritime importance of the region during the early modern period.
The visual appeal is enhanced by an elaborate decorative cartouche in the lower left, supported by classical columns and drapery, naming “Andaluzia continens Sevillam et Cordubam.” Heraldic shields and ornamental elements further enrich the composition, while original hand coloring highlights borders, coastlines, and geographic features, bringing the map to life.

Condition:
Good condition overall for its age, with central fold as issued. Light toning and minor foxing consistent with age. Margins are ample. The engraving remains crisp with attractive original hand coloring. Any small imperfections are typical for works of this period and do not detract from the overall presentation.
Framing tips:
This map displays beautifully in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a wide ivory mat, enhancing the warmth of the paper and the richness of the hand coloring. For a lighter setting, a slim black or bronze frame with a museum-style mount offers a clean and elegant presentation. A generous matting is recommended to give the piece strong wall presence.
