About this sheet
South America in the 1840s, titled "South America", an original engraving with hand outline color from The National Atlas of Historical, Commercial and Political Geography by A.K. Johnston, dated 1844. Alexander Keith Johnston was an Edinburgh geographer and one of the leading atlas makers of the nineteenth century.
The continent is shown whole, with a wide beaded border, the title in a framed panel at the lower right, and a note of the principal sources beneath it. The new republics and Brazil are outlined in soft pink and yellow, rivers and mountain ranges are drawn in fine detail, and the Pacific, the North Atlantic and the South Atlantic are lettered across the open sea. Gray shading around the coasts sets off the land from the water. Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands appear at the southern tip, and a small inset of Atlantic islands sits at the lower right.
The map shows the continent after the wars of independence, with the boundaries of the new states as they stood in the early 1840s.
