What the condition grades mean

Excellent: Bright and clean, with no faults worth mentioning.
Very good: Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.

About this sheet

Brazil and neighboring South America, an original antique map engraved by S. Hall and issued around 1844. The sheet is an engraving with colored outlines, and the plate title "BRAZIL" is set in a ruled box at the lower right, with an English-miles scale beneath it. Hall's engraver credit is lettered at the foot of the sheet.

The map shows the whole of Brazil from the Guiana coast at the top to the River Plate at the bottom, with the Amazon and its tributaries and the great rivers of the interior drawn in fine detail. Mountain ranges are hachured, and the long Atlantic coast is crowded with lettered ports and capes. Colored lines mark the borders with the Guianas, "Upper Peru or Bolivia," "La Plata" and the neighboring territories, and the Tropic of Capricorn crosses the lower half. Latitude and longitude are numbered in the neat double border.

The map dates from the period of the Empire of Brazil, which became independent from Portugal in 1822, and it records the settlement pattern of the time: dense place names along the coast and in the south, and a nearly empty interior.
