About this sheet
Brazil on a map engraved by Sidney Hall for A. & C. Black's atlas, issued about 1842 to 1853. The sheet is an engraved map with soft outline color, the title "Brazil" lettered in a ruled cartouche at lower right, and a plate number at upper right.
Brazil is tinted in a warm tan across the center of the sheet, with its borders picked out in red. Relief is drawn in hachures, with the great river systems of the Amazon and the Plata basin laid out across the interior and the long Atlantic coast lettered with ports and headlands, and the shaded coastal waters give the sheet a soft, painterly look. The map extends beyond the national borders to include Uruguay, Paraguay, the Guianas and parts of Colombia, Peru and Chile, which are left uncolored at the edges.
Sidney Hall was among the leading British engravers of the early Victorian period, and his plates for atlases were reused for decades.
