About this sheet

South America in the 1840s, titled "South America", an original engraving with hand outline color, published around 1840. The maker is not named on the sheet, and the map comes from an atlas whose source is not identified.

The continent is drawn with its countries bordered in color, in green, yellow, pink and orange, and with the title in a small framed panel at the lower left, above a scale in English miles. The Caribbean Sea, the North Atlantic, the South Pacific and the South Atlantic are lettered across the open water. The coasts are densely annotated with place names, the Amazon, Orinoco and La Plata rivers and their branches are drawn in, and Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands appear at the foot. An inset at the left shows an island group in the Pacific.

The map shows the continent after independence, with the newer republics of Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and the United Provinces drawn along the lines of the old Spanish viceroyalties.
