Excellent: Bright and clean, with no faults worth mentioning.
Very good: Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.

About this sheet

The southern provinces of South America in 1822, titled "Geographical, Statistical and Historical Map of the United Provinces of South America", an original engraving with hand color, drawn by J. Finlayson, engraved by Young & Delleker and published by H.C. Carey & I. Lea. It comes from A Complete Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas, being a Guide to the History of North and South America and the West Indies, and is numbered "No. 49".

The map in the center shows the territory of the United Provinces, the Río de la Plata states, in pink, green, yellow and blue, with Chile on the Pacific side, Paraguay and Brazil to the east, and Patagonia extending down the sheet. The title is set in a framed cartouche in the upper right of the map, with a scale beneath. Rivers, lakes and the Andes are drawn in, and the Río de la Plata estuary opens at the lower right. Printed columns on the left and right give the situation, boundaries, climate, population, commerce and history of the provinces.

The atlas was published in Philadelphia, and this sheet shows the territory shortly after the independence of the Río de la Plata states.
