About this sheet

South America in 1816, titled "South America", an original copper engraving with hand color, from Walker's New Atlas (the sheet is marked "Engraved for Walker's New Atlas") and printed by Barnard and Farley. The map is small and boldly colored, with the date written lightly in pencil at the upper right.

The continent is drawn with its colonial divisions in bright pink, green, yellow and blue, so that Brazil and the Spanish provinces stand out clearly against the pale sea. The title appears in the lower right, above a scale of English miles. The Pacific is lettered at the left and the Atlantic at the right, the Equator is marked near the top, and the coasts are densely lettered with place names. Rivers, lakes and mountain ranges are drawn in fine lines, and the southern tip shows Tierra del Fuego and the Falkland Islands.

The coloring is the main attraction of the sheet, which records South America at the opening of the independence era, when most of its states were still Spanish or Portuguese colonies.
