Wallachian Highlander Antique Costume Lithograph c.1852
This evocative nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Wallachyer uit het gebergte,” translated from Dutch as a Wallachian man from the mountains. The figure is shown wrapped in a heavy sheepskin cloak, wearing traditional regional attire associated with the historic region of Wallachia, one of the principal historical territories of modern-day Romania.
The print captures the rugged and romantic image of mountain life that fascinated European audiences during the nineteenth century. The sitter’s broad-brimmed hat, embroidered shirt, dark boots, and especially the large woolen or sheepskin outer garment reflect the practical dress traditions of shepherding and rural life in the colder upland regions of Eastern Europe. The dramatic cloak, rendered with remarkable texture through lithographic linework, dominates the composition and gives the figure a strong and memorable presence.
