Turkish Noblewoman in Ottoman Court Dress - Antique Lithograph, c.1852
This elegant nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Turksche Vrouw uit den Aanzienlijken Stand,” translated from Dutch as a Turkish woman of noble or distinguished rank. The figure is portrayed in an opulent Ottoman interior, dressed in richly embroidered garments and adorned with an elaborate headdress, reflecting the refinement and luxury associated with the upper classes of the Ottoman Empire during the nineteenth century.
The composition presents a graceful noblewoman standing beside luxurious textiles and furnishings while attended by a servant in the background. Her costume features flowing robes decorated with intricate ornamental motifs, a richly embroidered bodice, delicate lace trimming, and a colorful ceremonial headdress. Such attire was intended to convey status, wealth, and refinement, offering European audiences a glimpse into the fashionable world of Ottoman elite society.
During the nineteenth century, European publishers produced numerous costume series depicting the peoples and social classes of the world.
