Bulgarian Man in Traditional Dress Antique Costume Lithograph, c.1852
This vivid nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Bulgaar,” or Bulgarian man, portrayed in richly detailed traditional attire characteristic of the Balkan regions of Bulgaria. The figure stands barefoot and confidently posed, wearing loose garments, an embroidered vest, patterned headwear, and carrying a curved knife tucked into a broad sash, reflecting the strong regional identities and distinctive costume traditions of southeastern Europe during the nineteenth century.
The image embodies the romantic European fascination with the peoples of the Balkans and the Ottoman frontier regions. During this period, costume studies and ethnographic lithographs became highly popular among collectors, travelers, and publishers eager to document the varied dress and customs of Europe’s many cultures. Bulgarian costume in particular was admired for its bold colors, layered textiles, and practical yet decorative forms rooted in rural and pastoral traditions.
The lithograph is especially attractive for its restrained yet effective hand-coloring. Deep reds, blacks, and soft blues animate the garments while preserving the fine engraved and lithographic linework beneath.
