Russian Peasant from the Moscow Region Antique Costume Lithograph c.1852
This charming nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Landman uit de omstreken van Moscou,” translated from Dutch as a countryman or peasant from the surroundings of Moscow. The figure is portrayed in traditional rural dress, leaning upon a walking staff while gazing confidently toward the viewer, offering a glimpse into village life in the Russian countryside during the nineteenth century.
The costume reflects the practical attire worn by rural inhabitants of central Russia. The peasant wears a loose white tunic, striped trousers, sturdy footwear, and a simple cap, while a dark blue cloak is draped casually over one shoulder. Such garments were designed for durability and comfort in the demanding agricultural environment of the Russian interior. In the background, a female figure dressed in traditional costume adds depth to the scene and reinforces the depiction of everyday rural life.
During the nineteenth century, European publishers produced extensive costume series documenting the peoples and traditional dress of different regions around the world.
