Tyrolean Hunter from the Ziller Valley Antique Costume Lithograph
This charming nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Tijroler uit het Ziller-dal,” translated from Dutch as a Tyrolean man from the Ziller Valley in Zillertal. The figure is shown in traditional Alpine costume, leaning casually upon a long hunting rifle while dressed in regional attire associated with the mountainous Tyrol region of the Austrian Alps.
The composition beautifully captures the romantic image of Alpine life that fascinated nineteenth-century European audiences. The tall black hat, broad white shirt, fitted trousers, decorative leg coverings, and dark cloak reflect traditional Tyrolean dress, while the rifle hints at hunting culture and rural mountain life. In the background, a small female figure carrying goods further evokes the atmosphere of daily life in the Alpine countryside.
During the nineteenth century, costume lithographs became highly popular among collectors and travelers interested in regional cultures and folk traditions.
