Scottish Highland Clan Chief Antique Costume Lithograph c.1852
This striking nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts an “Opperhoofd van een clan in de Schotsche Hooglanden,” translated from Dutch as a clan chief from the Scottish Highlands. The figure is portrayed in elaborate Highland dress, richly adorned with tartan fabrics, feathered bonnet, ceremonial sash, and traditional weaponry, embodying the romantic image of Highland Scotland that captivated Europe during the nineteenth century.
The print reflects the enormous fascination with Scottish Highland culture that emerged during the Romantic era, particularly after the popular writings of Sir Walter Scott and the renewed interest in clan traditions and tartan dress.
