Russian Woman from Ukraine Antique Costume Lithograph c.1852
This elegant nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a “Russische Vrouw uit de Ukraine,” translated from Dutch as a Russian woman from Ukraine. The figure is portrayed in traditional rural dress beside a wooden well, holding a poised and dignified stance that reflects the romanticized ethnographic style popular in European costume illustration during the mid-nineteenth century.
The woman wears a flowing white blouse with voluminous sleeves, a richly patterned apron, layered skirt, and traditional jewelry, all delicately highlighted with hand-applied color. Her attire reflects the folk costume traditions of rural Eastern Europe, where embroidered textiles, woven aprons, and ornamental necklaces formed an important part of regional identity and ceremonial dress. The simple rural setting, including the well bucket and timber structure, adds narrative charm and reinforces the connection to village life and traditional customs.
