This striking nineteenth-century hand-colored lithograph depicts a Spanish picador, identified in Dutch as “Picador of Kampvechter bij de Stierengevechten in Spanje,” meaning a mounted combatant or picador from the bullfights of Spain. The figure stands confidently beside a wooden barrier while holding the long lance traditionally used in the arena, dressed in richly ornamented costume characteristic of Spanish bullfighting culture.
The print captures the romantic fascination that nineteenth-century Europe held for Spain and its dramatic traditions. Bullfighting, deeply associated with Spanish identity and spectacle, became a popular subject among artists, writers, and travelers during the Romantic period.
