A decorative set of four original antique French engravings illustrating medieval knights, soldiers, armour, weaponry and courtly service from the late twelfth to the fifteenth century.
The plates originate from the French series Costumes civils et militaires des Français à travers les siècles, published in Paris by F. Roy. The series was conceived as a historical visual survey of French civil and military dress across the centuries.
Each engraving is enhanced with original hand colouring and includes its original French title and publisher’s inscription.
The set comprises:
1. Sergent d’Armes du Roi des Ribauds Arrêtant un Pillard
A sergeant-at-arms of the King of the Ribauds apprehending a pillager. The armed officer wears a blue surcoat decorated with the French fleur-de-lis and carries a mace and shield.
The costume is dated between approximately 1290 and 1330.

2. Chevalier Servi par son Écuyer et ses Pages
A medieval knight being attended by his squire and pages. The scene shows the preparation of the knight’s horse and equipment, offering a detailed representation of courtly and military service.
The costume is identified as dating from the end of the twelfth century.

3. Pierre de Rohan Armé de Pied en Cap, 1475
An equestrian portrait of Pierre de Rohan wearing full plate armour and holding a baton as Marshal of France. His horse is presented in an elaborate heraldic caparison decorated with French royal emblems.

4. Voulgier, Crenequenier, en 1400
Two medieval soldiers wearing armour and carrying period weapons. One figure holds a polearm, while the standing soldier is equipped with a large shield and a mechanical crossbow.
The costumes are dated 1400.

The set is particularly suitable for collectors of medieval history, French military art, armour, heraldry, equestrian subjects and historical costume.
These are genuine original antique prints published circa 1860. They are not modern reproductions.

Condition:
Good antique condition with general age-related toning, foxing, scattered stains, minor handling marks and wear along the sheet edges. The fourth plate has more noticeable foxing and staining. The left margins show small irregularities and traces associated with former binding. Please study the photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.
