This finely detailed antique map of Syria and Egypt was published in Paris in 1838 as part of the celebrated Atlas Universel de Géographie Ancienne et Moderne by the distinguished French cartographer M. Lapie. The sheet presents a sweeping view of the Eastern Mediterranean, extending from Asia Minor and the Levant down through the Nile Delta and into Upper Egypt, capturing a region of immense historical and cultural significance.
The map is titled Carte de la Syrie et de l’Égypte Anciennes, emphasizing its focus on classical geography. Ancient regions, cities, and routes are carefully delineated, reflecting the scholarly interest of early 19th-century Europe in the civilizations of antiquity. The Nile River is rendered with exceptional clarity, winding through Egypt and branching into the Delta, while surrounding deserts, mountain ranges, and coastlines are articulated through fine hachuring.
