About this sheet

From Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas comes this antique fox hunting map of Yorkshire's East Riding, engraved by J. and C. Walker circa 1870 and colored by hand to show three hunt countries. Sir Tatton Sykes's country appears twice, in green across the northern Wolds and again in yellow in the west near Selby, this second area annotated "Hunted by the York & Ainsty" to record which pack actually rode the ground; York and Ainsty, in yellow, lies in the west of the Riding; and Holderness, in pink, the largest country on the sheet, covers the whole eastern peninsula between the Wolds and the North Sea coast down to Spurn Head.

The Yorkshire Wolds are rendered in careful hachure running north-east across the center, distinct from the flat, low-lying Holderness plain to the east. The Humber is drawn broad along the southern edge, with Hull and its docks in some detail, and the coast from Bridlington and Flamborough Head down to Spurn Point is worked with particular care, given the area's importance to shipping. A reference table for the wapentakes sits at lower left, and the cartouche, with the Riding's name and the Walker imprint, occupies the upper left.

William Colling Hobson compiled the atlas, J. and C. Walker engraved its maps on steel, and Longman and Company of Paternoster Row, London, published it, first around 1850 and in reissues running into the 1870s. Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas records the boundaries of the hunt countries in hand color and marks the places of meeting of the foxhounds; this sheet comes from the edition of circa 1870, with its boundaries in original outline hand color. The annotation distinguishing Sir Tatton Sykes's formal country from the ground actually hunted by the York and Ainsty is one of several places in the atlas where the compilers recorded a gap between nominal ownership of a country and the pack that hunted it.

As an original atlas sheet, suitable for framing, this antique fox hunting map of Yorkshire's East Riding makes a fine piece for a hunting family, a collector of the county or anyone with ties to the place.

The sheet is in good condition for its age, with age toning, stronger towards the edges, a central fold and a few small spots in the margins. Please review the images for further condition details.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
