About this sheet
This antique fox hunting map of Cumberland, engraved by J. and C. Walker for Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas circa 1870, depicts a county with a single colored hunt country. Mr Salkeld's boundary is run in pink in a broad loop around Carlisle, lettered "Mr Salkelds" and "Cumberland" in blue across the middle of the county. The greater part of Cumberland, the Lake District fells in the south, the Solway coast in the west and the wild ground toward the Northumberland border in the east, is left without a hunting boundary, since organized fox hunting on the modern pattern had not spread there by the date the atlas was compiled.
The hill shading across the Lakeland fells, rendered in fine hachures, is some of the most detailed topographical engraving in the atlas. The county's Eastern and Western Divisions are named in large open lettering across the map, with the wards keyed in a reference table at lower right alongside the places of election and polling places for each division. The cartouche at upper left carries the county name, the Walker imprint, the scale bar and the statistical note, and the plate is numbered at the top corners.
The atlas was compiled by William Colling Hobson, with maps engraved by John and Charles Walker, the London firm of J. and C. Walker, and published by Longman and Company of Paternoster Row. First issued around 1850 and reissued into the 1870s, Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas maps every county of England and the three Ridings of Yorkshire. This sheet belongs to the edition of circa 1870 and is a steel engraving, its hunt boundaries in original hand color, applied in outline. The sheet shows how unevenly fox hunting had spread by the mid-Victorian period: a single subscription country around the county town, set against a great expanse of fell and moor with no defined hunting territory to record.
This antique fox hunting map of Cumberland is an original sheet from the atlas and is suitable for framing; it is of particular interest to hunting families, to collectors of the county and to anyone with a connection to the place.
The sheet is in good condition for its age, with age toning, stronger towards the edges, a central fold, a few small spots and light soiling in the lower margin. Please review the images for further condition details.
