About this sheet

This antique fox hunting map of Derbyshire, from Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas, was engraved by J. and C. Walker circa 1870 and shows four hunt countries in hand color. Mr Lumley's, in pink, holds the north-east corner toward Worksop and the Nottinghamshire border; Rufford, in yellow, runs down the eastern edge; Hoarcross, in pink, crosses the south-west around Ashbourne and Uttoxeter, named for the house and kennels near the Staffordshire border; and Donnington, in green, takes the south-east toward Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the Leicestershire border. The Peak District in the north-west, its hill country rendered in dense hachure shading around Buxton and Castleton, carries no hunt color, as the ground was not hunted country in the conventional sense.

Derby sits at the confluence of the colored countries in the south, with the Midland Railway's branch lines converging on it in red. A reference table for the hundreds and a further table of the northern and southern divisions, with their places of election and polling places, occupy the lower left quarter. The county name appears in an ornamental cartouche at upper right beside the compass star, with "By J. & C. Walker" and the statistical note beneath it, and the plate is numbered 8.

Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas, compiled by William Colling Hobson and published by Longman and Company of Paternoster Row, London, first appeared around 1850 and was reissued into the 1870s; this sheet is from the edition of circa 1870. The plates were steel engraved by J. and C. Walker, and the boundaries of the hunt countries were added in original hand color, in outline, with the places of meeting of the foxhounds marked alongside roads, railways, canals and parks.

As an original atlas sheet, suitable for framing, this antique fox hunting map of Derbyshire makes a fine piece for a hunting family, a collector of the county or anyone with ties to the place.

The sheet is in good condition for its age, with age toning, stronger towards the edges, a central fold, a few small spots and light marks along the left edge. Please review the images for further condition details.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
