About this sheet

Original antique map of Scotland, a steel engraving colored by hand in outline, with the counties bordered in color and a pale blue wash along the coasts, lettered "SCOTLAND" in the title at the upper right. The map covers the whole of Scotland with the Hebrides, Skye and the islands of the Firth of Clyde, but not Orkney or Shetland, and takes in the north of Ireland and the English border counties of Cumberland and Northumberland. The Highlands are shown in strong hachuring, and railways run through the Central Belt and south toward England.

Beneath the title is a key to abbreviations, from "A. Abbey" and "B. Ben" to "S. Strath", "T. Tower" and "W. Water", then "Published under the Superintendence of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge" and two population figures: "Population including Islands 1841. 2.628.957" and "Population including Islands 1851. 2.870.784". The right margin carries a scale of "English Miles 69.1 = One Degree" and the lower border is lettered "Longitude West from Greenwich". The imprint below the border reads "London: Edward Stanford. 6. Charing Cross." and the plate number "5." is engraved at the lower right.

The map comes from The Harrow Atlas of Modern Geography, published in London in 1858 by Edward Stanford of 6 Charing Cross and sold at Harrow by Crossley and Clarke, booksellers to Harrow School. Its maps were selected from those of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge (SDUK), founded in London in 1826, which issued its map series in parts from 1829 and was wound up in 1848; Stanford later issued the maps under his own imprint. The map names the old Scottish counties, among them Haddington, Linlithgow, Peebles, Kirkcudbright and Wigton, with Edinburgh and Glasgow linked by rail.

Well suited to framing for anyone with a Scottish connection.

Condition: Light wear to the corners; minor nicks to the left edge. Age toning, darker at the edges; edge soiling and scattered foxing in the margins. A center fold, as issued. Light flecks in the image.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
