About this sheet

Six hunt countries are colored by hand across this antique fox hunting map of Shropshire, engraved by J. and C. Walker for Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas circa 1870. Sir W. W. Wynne's country, in yellow, lies across the west toward the Welsh border; North Staffordshire, in green, along the eastern edge; Shropshire itself, lettered in blue, across the center around Shrewsbury; Albrighton, in pink, through the east toward Wolverhampton; Wheatland, in yellow, in the south around Much Wenlock; and United Pack, in pink, in the south-east corner toward Bridgnorth. Ludlow's country is lettered along the southern border where it runs up from Herefordshire, Worcestershire's touches the eastern edge, and an inset at lower right shows a detached part of Shropshire near Dudley in Worcestershire.

The Severn winds through the center past Shrewsbury and Bridgnorth, the Long Mynd and the Clee Hills are rendered in heavy hachure in the south, and the industrial fringe toward the Black Country is noted at the eastern edge. A reference table for the hundreds sits at lower left, and the cartouche occupies the upper right.

Engraved on steel by J. and C. Walker of London, the plate was made for Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas, compiled by William Colling Hobson and published by Longman and Company of Paternoster Row. The work was first issued around 1850 and reissued into the 1870s, and this sheet is from the edition of circa 1870, with the hunt boundaries in original outline hand color and the places of meeting of the foxhounds marked, together with roads, railways, canals and parks. One of the more densely subdivided sheets in the series, it records hunting territory ranging from the Welsh marches in the west to the fringes of the Black Country coalfield in the east.

For hunting families, county collectors and anyone with a connection to the place, this antique fox hunting map of Shropshire is an original atlas sheet, well suited to framing.

The sheet is in good condition for its age, with age toning, a central fold, a small blue ink mark at the upper edge and a few small spots in the margins. Please review the images for further condition details.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
