About this sheet

A single hunt country is colored by hand across this antique fox hunting map of Monmouthshire, engraved by J. and C. Walker for Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas circa 1870. Lettered "Monmouthshire Hunt" in blue capitals running diagonally across the county, its yellow boundary takes in the whole of Monmouthshire from the Wye at Chepstow in the east to the Usk valley and the Welsh border in the west. An inset at upper right, headed "Detached Part of Monmouthshire," records a small outlying portion of the county separated from the main body and surrounded by a neighboring county.

The Wye gorge and the industrial valleys running north from Newport and Pontypool toward the coalfield are shown in some detail, with the principal ironworks and collieries of the western valleys named, a rare instance in the atlas of industrial landscape recorded this closely. A reference table for the hundreds sits at lower left, and the cartouche, with the county name and the Walker imprint, occupies the upper left corner.

This is a leaf from Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas in the edition of circa 1870. Compiled by William Colling Hobson and published by Longman and Company, Paternoster Row, the atlas was first issued around 1850 and reissued into the 1870s, covering every county of England and the three Ridings of Yorkshire. Its maps were engraved on steel by the London firm of John and Charles Walker, and the hunt boundaries are in original hand color, applied in outline. Monmouthshire is one of only a handful of counties in the atlas covered by a single hunt, industrial valley and agricultural border country alike hunted as one country.

This antique fox hunting map of Monmouthshire is an original sheet from the atlas and is suitable for framing; it is of particular interest to hunting families, to collectors of the county and to anyone with a connection to the place.

The sheet is in good condition for its age, with light age toning, a central fold and a few small spots in the margins. Please review the images for further condition details.

This is an original antique map, not a modern reproduction. This item is sold unframed. Any framed or interior images are shown for presentation and inspiration only, unless the listing explicitly states that the item is sold framed.
