About this sheet
This antique fox hunting map of Kent, engraved by J. and C. Walker for Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas circa 1870, shows four hunt countries colored by hand. Mr Colyer's country, in pink, lies through the north-west toward Gravesend and Rochester; the Surrey, in green, along the western border around Westerham and Tunbridge Wells; the Tickham, in yellow, across the center around Maidstone and the Isle of Sheppey; and East Kent, in pink, over the whole eastern half from Canterbury to Dover and Margate.
The Medway and its estuary are drawn in careful detail past Chatham and Sheerness, and the chalk cliffs of the east coast are noted at Dover and along the Straits. A large reference table at lower left keys the lathes and hundreds, local divisions particular to Kent, and a further table at lower right lists the courts for elections and polling places for the western and eastern divisions. The cartouche sits at upper right, and the sheet carries both a publisher's imprint at the foot of the plate and a separate engraver's credit, "Engraved by J. & C. Walker," at the lower right corner.
Engraved on steel by J. and C. Walker of London, the plate was made for Hobson's Fox-Hunting Atlas, compiled by William Colling Hobson and published by Longman and Company of Paternoster Row. The work was first issued around 1850 and reissued into the 1870s, and this sheet is from the edition of circa 1870, with the hunt boundaries in original outline hand color and the places of meeting of the foxhounds marked, together with roads, railways, canals and parks.
For hunting families, county collectors and anyone with a connection to the place, this antique fox hunting map of Kent is an original atlas sheet, well suited to framing.
The sheet is in fair to good condition for its age, with age toning, stronger towards the edges, brown staining in the lower margin, a central fold and a few small spots. Please review the images for further condition details.
