About this sheet
Suriname and the Dutch possessions in the Caribbean, a colored atlas map published around 1905 by W.J. Thieme and Company of Zutphen, numbered "Nr. 21" at the upper right. It is an original chromolithograph map lettered in Dutch.
The large map at the right shows "Suriname" in orange, with its rivers, mountain ranges, districts and settlements named across the colony, and the neighboring British Guiana at the left and French Guiana at the right in pale tints. Three insets fill the left side. At the top is a map titled "Ligging der Ned.Koloniën in Amerika" ("Position of the Dutch Colonies in America"), showing the Caribbean and the northern coast of South America with the Dutch territories in orange. Below are two maps of the islands: "De Curaçaosche Eilanden" and "De Ned. Antillen bovenwindsche", the Windward Islands. A small map at the upper center, "Nederland en Suriname", compares the colony with the area of the Netherlands.
The sheet was made for Dutch atlases and school use in the years when Suriname and the Antilles were Dutch colonies.
