Original folding map in very good antique condition. Even age toning consistent with late 19th-century paper. Light centre fold and secondary folds as issued. Minor foxing, primarily confined to the margins. Colors remain fresh and well preserved.
About this sheet
A geological map of Aruba, an original color lithograph from Karl Martin's Bericht uber eine Reise nach Niederlandisch West-Indien, published at Leiden by E. J. Brill in 1888. The sheet is titled "Geologische Karte von Aruba" at a scale of 1:100,000 and is lettered "Karte II" at the upper right, with the printer's imprint at the lower right.
The island lies from the northwest to the southeast, with Oranjestad on the southwestern coast and Fontein on the eastern side. The color key at the lower left distinguishes the formations: a wide pink field of quartz diorite across the north and center, brown diabase around Jamanota, small red patches of diorite porphyry, yellow Quaternary formation across the southeast, and grey for the youngest reef limestone, alluvium and dunes, with a dashed line marking the old sea coast. Hills, plantations and settlements are named along the coast and inland. The "Idealprofil durch Aruba, projicirt auf die Linie A-B", with the lengths and heights at different scales, runs across the upper right and shows the rock layers in section from coast to coast.
Martin, professor of geology at Leiden, surveyed the Dutch islands of the Caribbean, and this sheet records his results for Aruba.
