About this sheet
Juan Fernández Island in the South Sea, an original engraved chart titled "l'Ile de Juan Fernandes dans la Mer du Sud," lettered with its latitude and its distance of about 110 leagues west of the coast of Chile. It dates from about 1740 and is associated with the voyage of George Anson, whose squadron called at the island in 1741.
The island is drawn in plan, a long, narrow landmass with its mountainous western end and a lower, ridged eastern arm, shaded in hachures. The Baye de Cumberland on the north coast is named, and other bays, anchorages and capes are lettered around the shore with soundings. A smaller island lies off to the upper right. A large compass rose at the left sends rhumb lines across the sheet, and a scale of leagues runs along the bottom right. A page number is printed in the upper right corner, showing that the plate was cut for a book.
Juan Fernández lies in the Pacific off Chile and was a refuge for ships rounding Cape Horn. Anson's men recovered there after the long passage, and the island later became linked with Alexander Selkirk's stay.
