What the condition grades mean

Excellent: Bright and clean, with no faults worth mentioning.
Very good: Only light signs of age, such as faint toning.
Good: Normal signs of age for a sheet of this period: toning, some foxing, small marks or neat old repairs.
Fair: Clear faults such as staining, tears or repairs, priced to match.

About this sheet

Northern Brazil in the late eighteenth century, titled "Carte de la Partie Septentrionale du Bresil", an original copper engraving by Rigobert Bonne, published in Paris around 1780. The sheet is uncolored.

The map extends from the Atlantic coast, where the mouth of the Amazon lies near the top center, inland through the Amazon basin and the highlands of the interior. Rivers are drawn as bold double lines, with the Amazon and its tributaries dominating the sheet, and place names are given along the coast and on the interior stations. The Equator is marked as "Ligne Équinoxiale", with scale bars for leagues of Spain, Portugal and France in the upper right. The lettering in the interior includes "Goyaz" and the mission territories, and the Atlantic coast at the right is annotated with a sweep of ocean currents. The sheet carries the plate letters "Lat. IX" and a number at the upper corners.

Bonne was the royal hydrographer in Paris and produced many of the clean, practical atlas maps of the period, with relief drawn by short hachures rather than decorative figures.
