Antique Eurasian Hobby Falcon Print by Lilian M. Medland, circa 1908
A finely detailed original antique ornithological plate depicting a Eurasian Hobby perched on a branch in a natural woodland setting.
The bird is presented in a strong portrait composition, with its dark hood, bold facial markings, large alert eye and streaked breast carefully rendered. Lilian M. Medland’s restrained monochrome treatment captures both the elegant proportions and watchful character of this small falcon.
The plate was created for Charles Stonham’s important natural-history publication The Birds of the British Islands, published in London by E. Grant Richards. Volume III, which contains this plate, was issued in 1908.
Its balanced composition and subtle tonal quality make the print particularly suitable for a library, study, hallway, country-house interior or collection of antique bird and wildlife art.
