Adult Sparrowhawk and Chicks Antique Bird Prints, Set of Two, circa 1908
A finely detailed set of two original ornithological plates depicting an adult Sparrowhawk together with two studies of young Sparrowhawks at different stages of development.
The plates were created by British bird artist Lilian M. Medland for Charles Stonham’s important natural-history publication The Birds of the British Islands. The work was published in London by Grant Richards during the early 20th century.
The first plate presents the adult bird perched among leafy branches, while the companion plate shows two young birds, one newly hatched and the other beginning to develop its distinctive juvenile plumage. Together, the prints form an appealing study of the species from chick to maturity.
Their restrained monochrome palette and precise naturalistic treatment make them especially suitable for a traditional library, British country-house interior, study, hallway or collection of antique ornithological art.
These are original antique prints dating from circa 1908. They are over 100 years old and are not modern reproductions.
