Luise Miller, Schiller’s Kabale und Liebe – German Steel Engraving, 1859
Original mid-19th-century steel engraving depicting Luise Miller, the central heroine of Friedrich Schiller’s celebrated bourgeois tragedy Kabale und Liebe (Love and Intrigue), first published and performed in 1784.
Luise is portrayed as an elegantly dressed young woman in a domestic interior, standing beside a small table with a glass and plate. The finely rendered costume, furniture and interior details demonstrate the precision and tonal qualities characteristic of 19th-century steel engraving.
The composition was drawn by German-Austrian artist Arthur von Ramberg (1819–1875), whose name appears beneath the image as “A. v. Ramberg gez.” It was engraved by Konrad Conrad Geyer and produced for the Schiller-Galerie, an illustrated series devoted to characters from the dramatic works of Friedrich Schiller.

The elegant combination of German literary history, Romantic-era subject matter and detailed period costume makes this an attractive decorative print as well as an interesting piece for collectors of Schiller, German literature and 19th-century illustration.
