About this sheet
The flight of locks on the Erie Canal at Lockport, New York, an original steel engraving from Meyers Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany in the 1850s. The plate is printed in black and lettered below the image "Erie-Canal, Lockport (Verein. Staaten v. N. Am.)."
The view looks down the canal through a stone-walled lock, with its timber gates and walkway in the middle ground and the channel winding away between wooded banks to a high trestle bridge in the distance. At the left a large classical building with balconies and a rooftop terrace carries a sign for the "Union Hotel," and figures stand along the lock walls, with a barrel and crates on the towpath, a boatman at the gate and a group of seated travelers at the lower right. Houses and a mill-like building stand along the canal.
The locks at Lockport were built to lift boats up the Niagara Escarpment, a rise of roughly 60 feet. The Erie Canal, completed in 1825, linked the Hudson River and New York City with the Great Lakes and was one of the most consequential engineering works in the United States of its day.
