Allegory of the Arts – Antique Hand-Colored Stipple Engraving by J. Allart (c.1800)
A beautifully hand-colored stipple engraving published by J. Allart around 1800, depicting an allegory of the Fine Arts. Three classical female figures personify Painting, Sculpture, and Literature, each holding their respective attributes — a palette and brushes, a chisel and mallet, and a large manuscript. They gaze toward a radiant muse or divine figure emerging from the clouds, symbolizing creative inspiration and enlightenment.
The fine stipple technique produces delicate tonal gradients, giving the image a soft and refined finish. Rich original hand-coloring enhances the drapery, floral ornamentation, and luminous sky. Signed in the plate: “S. Kuyper del.” (artist) and “J. Portman sc.” (engraver). Imprint reads: “J. ALLART Excudit.”
