L’Asie (Asia) – Allegorical Antique Hand-Colored Print, Ferrario, Milan, 1815
This refined antique hand-colored print titled L’Asie presents an allegorical depiction of the continent of Asia, shown as a reclining female figure in a classical interior setting. The woman rests on a cushioned bed beneath draped fabric, surrounded by symbolic attributes including a garland of flowers and a bowl of smoking incense. These elements evoke ideas of abundance, sensuality, contemplation, and the exoticized perception of Asia in early nineteenth-century European thought.
The composition is derived from a fresco painting by Andrea Appiani, one of the leading neoclassical artists of Napoleonic Italy. Appiani’s influence is evident in the serene pose, idealized anatomy, and balanced arrangement, all hallmarks of neoclassical allegory. The image was translated into print through a finely executed etching and enhanced with original hand coloring, preserving the softness and elegance of the original painted design.
This print was published around 1815 as part of Giulio Ferrario’s monumental work Il Costume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli del Mondo, produced in Milan. Ferrario’s series was among the most ambitious illustrated projects of its time, combining ethnography, history, and allegory to present a global vision shaped by Enlightenment ideals and early nineteenth-century aesthetics. Allegorical plates such as L’Asie served to contextualize continents and cultures within a symbolic and philosophical framework rather than strict documentary realism.
As with other plates from the Milan edition, this sheet bears the original embossed blind stamp associated with Il Costume Antico e Moderno. This dry stamp was applied at the time of publication and serves as an important marker of authenticity. As issued, the embossing may lightly overlap the image area.
The print is offered unframed and is particularly well suited to collectors of neoclassical art, allegorical imagery, and early nineteenth-century European prints, as well as interior designers seeking a calm, elegant statement piece with historical depth.
Condition Report:
Good antique condition. Light age-related toning to the sheet with minor scattered spotting consistent with early 19th-century wove paper. Original hand coloring remains well preserved with soft, balanced tones. Original embossed blind stamp visible, as issued, possibly overlapping the image area. No major tears, losses, or restorations observed.
Framing Tips:
This allegorical subject benefits from a restrained, classical presentation. A wide ivory or soft cream mat enhances the paper tone and preserves visibility of the blind stamp. Suitable frames include light gilt, pale walnut, or painted neoclassical profiles. Museum glass is recommended to protect the original hand coloring while maintaining clarity.
